Carnelian meaning

The name carnelian comes from the Latin word for flesh due to its deep orangy red colour.

The Egyptians used this crystal to protect souls on their way to the afterlife. Jewellery has been created from carnelian for thousands of years and it was often used as a amulet for protection. Napoleon found an octagonal, inscribed carnelian seal on the battlefield in Egypt. He wore this ring at all times before leaving it to his nephew.

Throughout the bible carnelian is known by several different names including sardius. The quote below has many different interpretations but most agree the crystals in the description are symbolic, but what they are thought to symbolise varies.

“The person sitting there looked like jasper and carnelian, and there was a rainbow around the throne that looked like an emerald.”
Revelation 4:3 International Standard Version

Cleansing and charging carnelian

All crystals should be cleansed when you first get them and then regularly after that. They should also be charged to keep them at their full power.

Two of the most common ways to cleanse crystals is with water and with sunlight.

Is carnelian sensitive to water?

Carnelian is safe to put in water, however freshwater only as saltwater can damage this crystal.  Salt mixed with water gets into tiny holes in the surface of the stone which are invisible to the human eye and remains there after the water has dried.

Does carnelian fade in the sun?

Carnelian is fine to put in the sun.  It is best not to leave it there for more than a few hours especially if you are in an area with particularly strong sunlight.
